BUY IF

Free with no strings — repeatedly contrasted with paid Lucidchart/Gliffy

  • + Privacy-first architecture: client-side app, no accounts, files stay in your own Drive/Dropbox/GitHub
  • + Predictable and simple — 'rarely disappointed' In-N-Out reputation
  • + Good balance of simplicity, flexibility and function per long-time users

SKIP IF

Manual formatting time sink — aligning arrows, pixels, shapes and fonts by hand

  • − Weak automatic layout vs yEd (readable at 50-1000+ elements); launch-era UX confused new users
  • − XML file format not human-readable; text-based workflows push users to PlantUML/Mermaid
  • − No individual payment option — monetization targets corporate volume licensing only

Where the layers disagree ⚡

5 CONTRADICTIONS DETECTED

USER sentiment flips between the two HN snapshots: launch-thread users (+210) call diagram.ly's WYSIWYG 'early 2000s' and fumble the arrow-drag interaction, while later draw.io-thread users (+1091) call it the reliably good 'In-N-Out of charting' — reputation improved as the product matured.

USER VS BRAND

USER vs USER: draw.io wins on price and privacy (client-side, files in your own cloud), but the same commenters concede yEd beats it on auto-layout, PlantUML/Mermaid beat it on version-control-friendly text diagrams, and Whimsical beats it on UI/UX — free ≠ best-in-class.

USER VS BRAND

USER layer contains the only 'official' voice: the developer's own HN comment disavows the end-user market ('low cost, high volume, high earache, low clue') and frames the app as a demo for the enterprise mxGraph library — individual users are not the paying customer. BRAND layer is empty, so this cannot be cross-checked.

BRAND VS USER

VIDEO titles advertise Confluence/JIRA integration and a real-time sharing beta — features USER comments never mention (they discuss standalone diagramming); with no transcripts, no cross-check is possible.

BRAND VS VIDEO

No contradiction vs BRAND or INTERNET layers is possible: both are absent, so every verdict rests on one HN-sourced user layer plus three transcript-less videos.

The four realities of the Diagramly

Most review sites collapse everything into one number. We keep the layers separate so you can see where reality bends.

What actual buyers say

The 31 comments come from two HackerNews snapshots. (1) The diagram.ly launch thread (+210): first impressions were mixed-to-negative on UX — users couldn't discover that arrows require dragging (clicking spawned objects at top-left), and they requested Adobe-style spacebar panning, URL-based sharing, and UI-widget shape libraries. One would-be UML user called the WYSIWYG editor 'like it came out of the early 2000s' and bounced immediately. The developer replied candidly: the team doesn't want the end-user market ('low cost, high volume, high earache, low clue') and instead sells the underlying JavaScript diagramming library (mxGraph) to enterprises; diagram.ly is essentially the demo app, deployed on Google App Engine and almost entirely client-side. (2) A later, much larger thread (+1091): sentiment toward draw.io/diagram.ly itself is strongly positive — 'the In-N-Out of charting software… menu is short… price is right… I'm almost never disappointed' and 'a remarkable balance of simplicity, flexibility and function. And free!' Its architecture is a fan favorite: a client-side static web app with no user auth and no data storage; files live in users' own Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, GitHub, GitLab or Trello. The recurring criticisms: manual pixel-pushing ('SO MUCH TIME in draw.io making sure my arrows were even, making the pixels line up'), weak automatic layout versus yEd (praised for hierarchical/octilinear edge routing that stays readable with hundreds of elements), and an XML file format 'pretty overwhelming for humans' compared to text-first PlantUML or Mermaid (version-control friendly) — while Whimsical gets the nod for UI/UX. Lucidchart, the paid rival, draws the harshest words: 'slow to the point of being unusable once you had a few pages in a document' and 'a six page menu… spread so thin' — though a Lucidchart team member says performance has since improved. Several users want to pay for the tool but can't: no small-dollar donation channel exists because monetization is corporate volume licensing.

What reviewers showed on camera

Three videos exist, all on channels too small to count as influencer coverage (David Benson, 131 subs — apparently the developer himself; Hubert Huynh, 520 subs). Titles indicate: a Jan-2014 'Confluence-JIRA Diagramly-draw.io tutorial' (5,888 views), a general 'Diagram.ly drawing tool' overview (1,730 views), and a 'Diagramly real-time sharing beta' walkthrough (464 views). No transcripts were provided, so no claims from these videos can be verified or quoted. The only inferable signals: the product had native Confluence/JIRA integrations and was experimenting with real-time sharing. Confidence: very low.
