The four realities of the Incredible

Most review sites collapse everything into one number. We keep the layers separate so you can see where reality bends.

What actual buyers say

Sixteen comments, fifteen from a HackerNews thread around the phone's 2010 launch (one StackExchange answer about recording audio via a male-male cable into Audacity is only tangentially related). Overall reception skews positive on performance and software, negative on button design and specific bugs. PERFORMANCE & DISPLAY: The day-one owner review calls it 'the most pleasant experience' among all smartphones used, 'never used a more responsive phone — that includes the iPhone.' When a user asked whether web scrolling was jerky like other Android devices, the reply was: 'silky smooth it is. Upgraded sensor over the Nexus One. Better multitouch, better responsiveness in general, lower battery drain.' HTC SENSE UI: One buyer planned to flash stock Android but reversed course ('next time if I don't get an HTC, I might flash it and put Sense on it'). A quoted review snippet claims Sense is 'in many ways... superior to what Apple and Palm are offering.' Another day-one buyer 'loves' the Facebook integration with SenseUI. HARDWARE BUTTONS (main complaint): The four touch-sensitive front buttons are 'prone to accidental presses' with 'no feedback of any sort' per one user; another pleads 'please, please don't make them touch-sensitive.' Defenders counter that haptic feedback exists and the buttons light up in the dark, though they concede physical buttons still win in some scenarios. SOFTWARE BUGS: A consultant who set one up for a client found it merely 'OK... nothing super impressive' — an older Blackberry 'was able to play video about as quickly' — and reports the bundled mail app (different from Droid's) 'silently bombs on self-signed SSLs' during POP/IMAP setup, failing after hitting 'Next' on server config. A quoted Engadget note says Flash Lite 'had lots of trouble getting videos to play on many of the sites we visited (Engadget included)'; a commenter concludes 'consider the job unfinished' for Flash on such devices. ERGONOMICS & INTEGRATION: A 2-day owner reports it 'feels nice in the hand, great Google integration, sweet camera,' though 'many functions take one more step/button-press than on the iPhone.' CAVEAT: Several comments are meta-discussion about the source article using wrong photos (an HTC Supersonic and a Windows Mobile HTC HD2) rather than substantive phone feedback.
