The four realities of the Guitoro

What actual buyers say
Guitoro's HackerNews launch thread is overwhelmingly positive from a crowd that is normally hard to impress. A 20-year guitar veteran called it 'incredible' and praised 'the feat of getting all this in browser'; the most enthusiastic user discovered that solo mode turns any typing keyboard into an instrument — they had ChatGPT translate songs into keyboard notes and played Happy Birthday 'like a typing test.' Accessibility emerged as an unplanned strength: one user's father, unable to hold a guitar since a stroke, 'thought it was awesome.' Mobile works: tested flawlessly on an iPhone 13 with touch strumming, 'sounds fantastic.' Veteran players compare it to GarageBand's iPad Smart Guitar and one argues it could be 'a legit musical instrument' as a modernized autoharp rather than a guitar substitute. The criticism cluster is specific and technical: (1) the strum engine cuts ringing strings on chord changes — the top comment explains that unchanged strings should keep ringing, and bar-chord brightness/palm-muting behaviors are missing; (2) one skeptic calls it 'a novelty site' — you must strum down before you can strum up, 'always producing a sound you don't want,' and fingerpicking can't be replicated; (3) the chord-to-keyboard mapping is unintuitive (chord names don't match key labels) and major chords dominate — users propose number keys 1-7 for diatonic chords and Shift/Ctrl/Alt modifiers for up/down strums and minor/7th voicings; (4) no custom or alternate tunings, which blocks one long-time player from switching from OOlimo; (5) the low-E-on-top layout confused several guitarists until they switched to Tab view; (6) smaller requests: chord previews in autocomplete, a fretboard chord builder, palm-percussion tap zone, and monophonic-style pitch bend. Ecosystem effects are already visible: a user built a flute clone ('Flutewizard') with Claude the same day, and a Toronto Metropolitan University researcher is working on a physical 'digital luthier kit.' The single Product Hunt comment is the maker's own post describing the product as free with no signup/download, offering acoustic, classical, electric and bass instruments, chord-fingering display, 20% song slow-down, and free guitar/bass/ukulele tuners.
